Sombrero Craft Night

Date: 9/18/23 Time: 7pm Location: Multicultural Center (Lower CUB) Description: Come on down and decorate your own sombrero (Mexican hat) to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, a taco bar will be available, as well while you create your artistic Mexican hat! All supplies are provided.

Flamenco Presentation

Date: 9/28/23 Time: 7pm Location: Greyhound Lounge Description: Nicolasa Chávez, and her professional guitarist will be dancing Flamenco, a style of dance originating from Southern Spain. This presentation traces the history of Flamenco in music and song. The presentation begins with flamenco's origins in Medieval Spain through the present, concentrating on its arrival in the US and New Mexico. This dynamic duo will share the history and meaning behind the music and songs along with personal stories as flamenco performers in New Mexico. This event is co-sponsored with the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Life on the Border

Date: 10/05/23 Time: 2pm Location: Sandia Room Description: Gabriela Moreno, Assistant Professor and Language and Linguistics Coordinator for the Heritage Speaker Program at New Mexico State University, earned her Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature with an emphasis in Border Studies. Dr. Moreno presents a talk that captures the essence of life on the border. She steps back in time to reminisce about the moments in history that shaped her Chicana/Fronteriza identity. Gabriela addresses her existence within heterotopias (incompatible spaces) and homotopias (conforming spaces) that help her navigate through her imagined communities by creating a Third Space. Her commentary on discursive and social practices in everyday life, bring light to the way in which we function within our own power relations. This event is co-sponsored with the New Mexico Humanities Council.

The Foot Runners

Date: 10/11/23 Time: 2pm Location: Sandia Room Description: Raramuri, Uto-Aztecan for Tarahumara, are among the world's best runners from lives spent traversing the canyon walls and plateaus of the Sierra Madre Occidental in northern Mexico. In a personal narrative complimented by anthropological, ethnographic and scientific research, Diana Molina will feature the exceptional Raramuri culture, discuss the impact of modern society on their lifestyle and highlight the amazing expanse of the canyon environment with stunning photographs taken while living among the tribe for extended periods of time. This event is co-sponsored with the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Kinesiology: Promoting Health and Wellness in the Hispanic Home and Community

Date: 10/12/23 Time: 2pm Location: Sandia Room Description: This presentation will discuss the role of kinesiology in promoting physical activity and wellness in the Hispanic community, focusing on Dr. Richard Guerra's personal experiences living, learning, and promoting health and wellness in his home and community.  Dr. Guerra, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Sport Administration Graduate Coordinator at ENMU, will share how his Hispanic heritage has influenced his approach to promoting health and fitness and discuss the unique considerations and challenges that should be considered when promoting physical activity and wellness among Hispanics. This event aims to inspire individuals to prioritize their health and well-being and to provide practical tips and advice for incorporating physical activity into their daily lives.

Flamencosa- Flamenco Performance

Date: 10\19\23 Time: 7:00 p.m. Location: CUB Ballroom Description: Flamencosa brings together an ensemble of 20 flamenco artists to produce an impressive evening of music and dance. La Compañía, the flamenco performance group from the Public Academy for Performing Arts, accompanied by live musicians, will present a variety of flamenco choreographies arranged by Fabian Sisneros. The performance will also include a solo performance by professional flamenco dancer and instructor Fabian Sisneros and a guest soloist. 

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Craft Night

Date: 10\31\23 Time: 6:00 p.m. Location: Multicultural Center (Lower CUB) Description: El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a Hispanic celebration to commemorate loved ones who have departed. The office will have various stations for crafts, such as making a beautiful Día de los Muertos headband, Day of the Dead Planters, Glowing Mason Jar Sugar Skull lantern, and Puffy paint Sugar Skull Rocks! Supplies will be provided.
