Circulation Student Guide

Cleaning Tasks and Zones:

Circulation students are responsible for cleaning all the study areas and the tops of shelves that have no books in the General Collection and in the Juvenile/K-12 curriculum areas. The following system is how all cleaning duties will be assigned. Students will be expected to do their cleaning duties and shelf reading. Students cannot say they did not do one because they had to do the other. In there is a library patron in one of the study areas of your zone, skip that area, but clean all the others.

  • Task Assignments by Hour: At the beginning of each hour, one student at the Circulation desk is assigned to step away for 15 minutes to complete cleaning duties, while the other stays at the desk. They can switch roles halfway through if needed.
  • Cleaning Zones: The following are the cleaning zones.
    • Zone A: Study tables and nearby seating
    • Zone B: Individual study areas (cubicles or carrels)
    • Zone C: Tops of shelves without books
  • Task Checklist for Each Zone:
    • Wipe down tables and surfaces thoroughly.
    • Clear any trash or clutter.
    • Check for any spills or maintenance issues and report them if found.
  • Accountability: Students will place their initials on the Library Cleaning Task Checklist for one of the cleaning zones for each hour they are working. A copy of the Library Cleaning Task Checklist will be kept on the left Circulation Computer desktop. Students will need to print the checklists out as needed (recommend 10-20 at a time) Students will be expected to communicate with each other to ensure that one person is at the Circulation Desk while the other is cleaning. The   Library Cleaning Task Checklist will be monitored by your supervisor. Students who consistently do not do their assigned cleaning tasks will face disciplinary action up to possible termination.
