Embedded Librarian/Librarian Role in Canvas

Add a librarian to your Canvas course using the “Embedded Librarian” or "Librarian" role. Your librarian can help you embed research materials, provide (synchronous or asynchronous) instruction, or participate in class and/or research discussions.

The Embedded Librarian role has the following permissions:

  • Announcements – view
  • Course Calendar – add/edit/delete events
  • Course Content – add/edit/delete
  • Discussions – create/moderate/post/view
  • Groups - view all student groups
  • Manage pages
  • Users: view list/view login IDs/View primary email address

The Librarian role has the following permissions:

  • Announcements - view
  • Conversations - send to individual course member
  • Discussions - view/post
  • Groups - view all student groups
  • Users: view list/view login IDs/View primary email address

Why should you consider adding an embedded librarian to your course?

  • It allows your students to ask questions of the librarian directly in Canvas. We can address any research questions students may have, which allows you to focus more on course content.
  • It brings the library experience directly to students. They can not only access a subject or course-specific LibGuide, they can search for books, articles, etc.
  • It facilitates the library experience for online students who don't physically come to campus.
  • It allows librarians to address topics that may not get covered in a 50 or 75-minute class session (evaluating information, for example).
  • It removes the intimidation factor, or reluctance to visit the library.

If you would like to add a librarian to your Canvas course, please contact your liaison librarian via email and they will work with you!

Librarians are available to visit your class to provide instruction to students on the use of library databases, the research process, evaluating/citing resources, or any topic related to critical thinking, research and information evaluation. The instruction session can be tailored to the research or assignments for the course, or we can provide general instruction on research approaches and tools for particular disciplines and subject areas.  Please fill complete the library instruction request form and a librarian will be in touch with you shortly to discuss your needs.  We are able to do instruction for online, hybrid and face to face courses.  We look forward to working with you!  Library Instruction Request Form

Golden Library Instruction Program Overall Goal: Students will be empowered in the research process, understanding how complex and nuanced information is and how librarians and the library contribute to their college experience.

Golden Library's primary function is to support ENMU's teaching and learning mission. Library holdings consist of a basic liberal arts collection with emphasis in education, humanities, history, science and business. Periodical databases, eBooks and interlibrary loan provide access to other collections. The library maintains a number of special collections, the largest being the Jack Williamson Science Fiction Collection. The library is a selective depository for the U.S. government and the state of New Mexico.

The library builds and maintains the collection according to curricular content and needs. All material purchased with library funds becomes library property and is available to all members of the university community. Discipline-specific purchase recommendations are the responsibility of the faculty in collaboration with their librarian liaison. A librarian liaison is assigned for each department and works directly with the faculty across the department to collaborate in purchasing materials to add to the collection.

The VR Lab at Eastern New Mexico University is a valuable resource for educational and research purposes. The lab is located on the 2nd floor of the Golden Student Success Center.  A student VR Lab Ambassador staffs the VR Lab during walk-in and open hours or by appointment. The VR Lab Ambassador is available to train faculty and students on the use of VR technology.

Faculty can request VR applications to be added to the suite of available apps in the lab.  Library Collection Development Department funds are able to be used to purchase VR apps for the lab.  Faculty should contact their liaison librarian to discuss this process.  For more information on the VR Lab, please visit the VR Lab Site.
