Why use books?

Even though most of your research will happen online, there are still very good reasons to look at books for information when conducting research. They can provide:

  • A much deeper dive into a topic than articles.
  • Background information.
  • Historical insight into a topic.
  • The opinion or point of view of a single author

How to find information in books

While many books on a given topic are straight forward, sometimes you will need to do a bit of digging to find out if a book is appropriate for your topic.

Table of Content:

When looking at the detailed record of an item, the table of contents will generally be listed as a "Contents Note"

Index:

When a book covers more than just your topic, check and see if there is an index in the back. Look up your topic to see if it is specifically covered.
